Introductory Certificate in Policing L3

Course overview

This exciting new part time course for adults is designed to provide students with an understanding of the principles of crime and the police, and to allow you to explore the various avenues of work within it. It will also allow you to gain transferable skills that can be applied to the workplace or to further study.

This qualification will give you:

• the opportunity to investigate career opportunities in the police service and other criminological roles.

• the ability to prepare for the entry process

• preparation for higher level study such as a degree or other university-level programme of study

• an understanding of the principals of crime scene management

• an understanding of aspects of civic and criminal law, as well as the UK courts systems. And you will carry out research into criminal cases to aid your understanding of how the courts deal with criminal offences.

Course requirements

You will be considered for a place on this course if you have achieved:

A minimum of four GCSE's 9-4 (A-C), or a BTEC/NCFE Level 2 at Merit or above.

Level 2 Criminology / Uniformed Services qualification

Life experience will also be considered when considering applications from mature students.

A genuine interest in the subject is essential - and an interview will take place.

What will I do?

You will cover:

Preparing for a career in the police service - in this unit you will explore the entry routes and different career pathways available in the police service. You will then prepare a personal profile, application and take part in a real or simulated interview. Following this, you will evaluate your performance and suggest areas for development.

UK legal systems and the police service - in this unit you will examine UK civil and criminal law and identify the structure and roles within the UK courts systems. You will explore different categories of criminal offence and carry out in-depth research into criminal cases in order to understand the processes involved in dealing with them through the legal system leading into an understanding of how legal systems impact on the police force.

Crime Scene Investigation – in this unit you will research the principles of crime scene management and carry out an investigation of a crime scene, securing evidence and producing a crime scene report. You will analyse the outcomes of the data gathered and consider possible scenarios in order to reach a conclusion.

What will it give me?

Successful completion of this course will give you the NCFE Level 3 Introduction Certificate in Policing.

Materials needed

You will need all basic stationery items for studying. It would also be advantageous for you to have a laptop computer, however this is not essential as the College has a dedicated Learning Zone centre and Adult Learning area for our adult students.
