Pioneering programme completes latest redecorating project

A pioneering programme which provides work experience opportunities for young people interested in a career in painting and decorating has completed its latest community project.

Trades4Care pairs students from Bishop Auckland College with qualified tradespersons to work on maintenance projects at healthcare, education and community venues as part of a wider life skills and employability programme.

The innovative Community Interest Company has already completed refurbishments at venues including Raff Yard House at Raby Castle, West Lodge Care Home in Crook, Butterwick Hospice in Bishop Auckland and Stainton Village Hall in Barnard Castle.

Its latest happy client is Ingleton Village Hall, near Staindrop, which has received a makeover by the Trade4Care team – Director Charlie Wright, Lead Sub-Contractor Nigel Stevens and apprentices Cameron Southworth and Alex Pickering, assisted by former BAC students Luke and David.

Dean Wyllie and Josh Clark from Bridge Creative, along with support workers Charlotte and Rachel, also came to lend a hand to learn about decorating first hand.

Melanie Ingleson, Bookings Officer at Ingleton Village Hall, said: “I popped in a few times to see progress and was amazed at how quickly and efficiently they were all working together. I spoke to the young people involved and I was impressed with their work and enthusiasm.

“I would highly recommend Trades4care to any community looking to employ them for their work encouraging young people, giving them life skills as well as a useful trade so they can gain employment throughout their adult life.”

Cameron, 19, was hired as Trades4Care’s first apprentice last year by directors Andrew Coxon, Charlie Wright and Deborah Jenkins after her successful work placement, which included projects at Raff Yard House, Heighton and Bishopton primary schools and Stanhope Village Hall.

Alex Pickering, also 19, was then hired by Nigel as his first apprentice, after he also impressed on placement.
