Course overview

The AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting provides a solid foundation in finance administration and core accounting principles. This qualification is ideal for individuals starting out in a finance or accounting career and is designed to develop essential bookkeeping and accounting skills.

Accounting is a key function in any business, and this course introduces students to double-entry bookkeeping, basic costing techniques, and the use of ledgers. It also explores broader business and personal skills needed in today's finance sector.

Learners will explore a range of professional areas including bookkeeping systems, reconciliations, cost recording systems, and business environments. The course also integrates four key themes that reflect modern accounting practices: ethics, technology, communication, and sustainability.

The AAT Level 2 Certificate does not by itself qualify students for advanced roles in finance but serves as a stepping stone to higher qualifications, such as the AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting, or junior finance roles.

Part Time

If applicants have no formal qualifications, they may be asked to complete an initial assessment to determine course suitability. Life experience and work background will also be considered for mature learners. A commitment to learning and good organisational skills are essential.

What will I do?

This will typically delivered one full day in college - Part Time and delivered Monday, Wednesday and Thursday - Full Time

You will study:

- Setting up and using bookkeeping systems
- Recording financial transactions
- Reconciling accounts and correcting errors
- Using costing techniques for budgeting and decision-making
- Understanding legal, ethical, and business contexts of accounting

What will it give me?

On successful completion, you will gain the AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting, a nationally recognised qualification that opens the door to entry-level roles in finance, such as:

- Accounts Assistant
- Finance Administrator
- Purchase Ledger Clerk
- Trainee Bookkeeper

It also provides a solid foundation for further study at Level 3 or apprenticeships in accounting and finance.

Materials needed

You will need:

- Basic stationery (notebooks, pens, calculators, etc.)
- A folder or lever arch file with dividers and plastic wallets
- Access to a device for any digital accounting software or online learning tools (if required)

There may be optional costs for additional learning resources or certification materials. Some training providers may require or offer uniforms, but this varies by centre.

What can I do when I finish?

Upon successful completion of this course, you can progress to:

- AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting
