If you like making things and enjoy working with wood, this could be an ideal apprenticeship for you. Carpenters and joiners make and install wooden fixtures and fittings as part of construction projects. To become a carpenter or joiner you will need to have an eye for detail. You will also need good maths skills for measuring and working out angles.
A Site Joiner will cut and shape timber for floorboards, skirting boards, window frames, make and assemble doors, staircases, roof joists, roof timbers, partition walls,etc for shops, hotels, banks, offices and public buildings as well as construction sites.
Ideally, you will have 5 GCSEs A*-C including English and maths.
What will I do?
You will be required to complete the NVQ and Diploma in Joinery (Site) as well as completing Employment Rights and Responsibilities and Personal Learning and Thinking Skills.
If it is required, you will also need to complete Functional Skills in Mathematics and English.
You will be allocated an assessor who will visit you in your work place to provide support with the NVQ and you will attend Bishop Auckland College 1 day a week to complete theory work.
What will it give me?
You will gain a nationally recognised qualification as well as developing on the job skills and improving your career prospects.
Nothing, your employer will provide you with PPE (protective clothing).
