This course will suit you if you have a Level 2 Motor Vehicle qualification or a relevant level of technical skills and knowledge and are seeking to gain more responsibility by supervising others, running your own business or moving into a diagnostic technician level. You will work with minimum supervision and have a good record of safety, fault correction and ensuring work meets the required standard. This course involves you studying theory of motor vehicle technology and developing practical maintenance and repair skills.
A relevant Level 2 qualification (such as City & Guilds 4290 at Level 2) a keen desire to progress into a higher level in the motor industry and English and/or maths skills depending on course requirements. An interview and short assessment will assess your suitability and interest in the subject.

Topics covered include Health and Safety and Good Housekeeping in the Automotive Environment, Support Skills for Job Roles in the Automotive Work Environment, Skills in Materials, Fabrication, Tools and Measuring Devices in the Automotive Environment, Inspecting Light Vehicles Using Prescribed Methods, Diagnosing and Rectifying Light Vehicle Engine Faults,Diagnosing and Rectifying Light Vehicle Chassis System Faults, Diagnosing and Rectifying of Auxiliary Electrical Faults, Diagnosing and Rectifying Light Vehicle Transmission and Driveline Faults. You will sit five multi-choice examinations and undertake practical assessments in related workshop activities, including completing a portfolio. Maths and English is also taught as part of the programme.
