Advanced Apprenticeship in Barbering

Overview

Apprenticeships are a popular choice for people aged 16 or above, looking for on the job training and the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications whilst earning a wage. Most of your training will be directly linked to the career you have chosen, gaining practical experience in the workplace.

An Apprenticeship in Hairdressing will develop your employability skills and give you valuable experience of a variety of routine hairdressing related activities. You will be working in a salon environment where your duties could encompass many areas of hairdressing such as, communicating with colleagues and clients, dealing with customer enquiries, carrying out numerous practical hairdressing tasks etc. Your exact duties will depend upon your employer.

Where possible staff from Bishop Auckland College Apprenticeship Team will help you find an employer and place of work (although students who are already employed are welcome to apply if sponsored by their employer). Your offer of Apprenticeship training will be dependent on work places being available.

Course requirements

The Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Barbering will allow the junior barber to advance their creative skills.
The minimum number of credits required for completion of this pathway is 57 credits (minimum of 47 for the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Barbering plus 5 credits for Functional Skills English and 5 credits for Functional Skills Maths)

What will I do?

What will it give me?

These qualifications allow learners to develop skills essential to working in a hairdressing salon, such as providing consultation services or for clients and awareness of health and safety. The qualifications develop the specialist skills needed to carry out hairdressing or barbering services. Learners will carry out their work within a realistic work context.

Materials needed

To have a successful career in barbering you need drive and motivation to help you constantly improve and upgrade your personal and technical skills, in order to stay ahead of emerging and current trends and fashion.

What can I do when I finish?

  • Learners can progress from Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Barbering to relevant Foundation Degrees in Salon Management.
  • Learners can progress from Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Barbering (Combined Hair Types) to relevant Foundation Degrees in Salon Management.
  • Learners can progress from Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Barbering to relevant Foundation Degrees in Salon Management.
  • Learners can also progress to employment.
  • Progress to a Level 3 (Advanced) Apprenticeship in Barbering or you could progress L2 (intermediate) Apprenticeship in Hairdressing.
