Course overview
This Level 1 Construction Programme is a hands-on introduction to working in the construction industry, designed for learners who want to build practical skills and confidence. You will spend time in workshops learning core trade skills such as bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, and painting and decorating, with plenty of practical activities and real work tasks. The course also includes important health and safety training, giving you the chance to work towards your CSCS Green Card exam so you understand how to stay safe on site as well as site tickets. Alongside practical work, you will learn some basic construction theory and develop employability skills like teamwork, communication, timekeeping and preparing for work, helping you get ready for further training, apprenticeships or entry level jobs in construction. Bishop Auckland College works with many local employers who may be in a position to interview around work opportunities as well as a visit to a working site.
Course requirements
No prior experience is needed, this course is open to all women interested in learning practical construction skills. You must be able to follow health and safety guidance in a workshop environment. All abilities are welcome, and our tutors will support you at a pace that suits your confidence level. Full PPE must be worn while working in the practical areas.
What will I do?
During the course you will: Try introductory skills in key trades such as bricklaying, carpentry and painting & decorating. Learn how to use hand tools safely and correctly. Explore workshop practices and understand basic construction processes. Gain confidence working with materials, measurements, and simple practical tasks. Develop teamwork and problem-solving skills through guided projects. Learn essential workplace health & safety and understand how construction sites operate. Activities are fully supervised, practical, and tailored to beginners.
What will it give me?
A basic knowledge of the construction industry and knowledge of Health and Safety including the CSCS Green Card (Labourer) if I successfully pas the test.
Materials needed
You will need: Safety boots and suitable workshop clothing. A notebook and pen for reflections and practical notes. All tools, equipment, and materials for practical tasks will be provided by the college.
What can I do when I finish?
After completing the course, you will have the confidence and foundation skills to: Progress onto a Level 1 construction course in trades such as bricklaying, carpentry, painting & decorating or multi-skills. Move towards apprenticeships or further occupational training. Take the next steps into construction-related career pathways with increased awareness of industry expectations. Continue building your skills through short courses, workshops, or vocational qualifications. Or use the Green CSCS Card to work as a labourer on site within the industry. This course is a great starting point for women looking to join a growing, diverse, and rewarding industry.
