The HNC in Electrical and Electronics Engineering is a two-year part time programme on which students will be required to attend South West Durham Training at Newton Aycliffe one day per week. The modules studied will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of electrical and electronic systems and principles.
Within this programme, students have the opportunity to study two additional modules, enabling the HNC in Electrical & Electronics Engineering to be achieved in one year rather than two. All students will carry out practical work on and in our electrical training facilities, electronics lab and engineering workshops. These sessions provide the opportunity to work on industrial standard equipment, to develop skills including; PLC programming, electrical/electronic circuit building and electrical measurement and testing.
5 GCSEs at A*-C level including English and Maths; OR Level 3 BTEC Diploma or Level 3 Extended Diploma, A-Level qualifications in maths or science; OR For mature students with appropriate work experience a ‘bridging’ programme in engineering principles and mathematics may be required.
Entry will also be subject a satisfactory interview.
What will I do?
Teaching and learning is achieved by using a range of methods including taught classes, tutorials, and practical sessions. The modules undertaken on this programme will include:
- Analytical Methods for Engineers
- Engineering Science
- Utilisation of Electrical Energy
- Electrical Power
- Digital & Analogue Devices & Circuits
- Electrical & Electronic Principles
- Quality & Business Improvement
You will be assessed through written assignments, phase tests and practical assessments.
What will it give me?
Students have the opportunity to progress to a one year L5 HND Diploma in Electrical & Electronics Engineering, with further progress to a top-up Degree in Engineering (subject to achieved grades). This course also provides opportunities for employment in electrical and electronics engineering industries, for example:
- Electrical Engineer
- Electrical Maintenance Technician
- Electrical Design Engineer and Electronics engineer
