Course overview

The Level 2 Award in Ceramics is a practical and creative qualification designed for learners who want to develop skills and confidence in working with clay. This course introduces a range of ceramic techniques, processes, and materials while encouraging creativity, problem-solving, and personal expression. Learners will gain an understanding of how ceramics are designed, made, finished, and evaluated, while exploring both functional and decorative outcomes. The course is suitable for those with some previous experience or a Level 1 qualification who wish to build on existing skills in a supportive workshop environment.

Course requirements

A level 1 or equivalent qualification, a keen interest in ceramics and a commitment to attend full year course.

What will I do?

During the course, learners will explore a variety of ceramic techniques including hand-building methods such as pinch, coil, and slab construction, as well as surface decoration, glazing, and finishing techniques. You will learn how to safely use tools, equipment, and materials while developing ideas from initial concepts through to completed ceramic pieces. Practical workshops will encourage experimentation with form, texture, and design, helping learners create a portfolio of ceramic outcomes and reflect on their creative development.

What will it give me?

This qualification will help you build practical ceramics skills, creative confidence, and an understanding of the ceramic-making process. It supports the development of problem-solving, planning, and evaluation skills while encouraging independent and creative thinking. Learners will gain a recognised Level 2 qualification and develop transferable skills such as patience, attention to detail, and confidence in using specialist materials and techniques. The course may also support progression into further creative study, employment, or personal creative practice.

Materials needed

Basic ceramic materials, clay, and access to specialist tools and equipment are typically provided during lessons; however, learners may be asked to bring a sketchbook, notebook, apron, and suitable clothing or footwear for studio work. Additional materials for personal projects or specialist finishes may occasionally be required, and your tutor will advise if this is necessary. It is recommended that learners wear clothing suitable for a practical workshop environment.

What can I do when I finish?

After completing the Level 2 Award in Ceramics, learners may progress onto higher-level art, craft, or ceramics qualifications, specialist creative workshops, or wider vocational programmes within art and design. The course also provides an excellent foundation for developing ceramics as a hobby, building a creative portfolio, or exploring opportunities in community arts, studio practice, or creative industries.
