Course overview

Would you like a career in construction but are unsure of which trade, then this is the qualification for you! Designed to give you a taster in bricklaying. The course covers some theory elements as well as practical tasks to enhance your skills. Students also have the opportunity to visit construction sites and hear from visiting speakers, before progressing further in their chosen craft.

No prior experience or requirements needed.

What will I do?

Setting out simple brickwork - marking out dimensions for small walls using tape measures, lines, and pins. Laying bricks to a line - learning how to place bricks accurately using a string line as a guide. Mixing and applying mortar correctly - practicing how to spread, butter, and joint mortar. Building small wall sections - such as: stretcher bond walls, half-brick walls, corner details (quoin building) and creating basic joints. Health and safety training - PPE, safe lifting techniques, awareness of site hazards. Understanding brick types and properties - clay bricks, concrete blocks, engineering bricks. Learning bonding patterns - stretcher bond, English bond, Flemish bond (intro level). Introduction to building regulations - especially relating to walls, damp proofing, and structural basics.

What will it give me?

A basic understanding of bricklaying practical and theory skills, plus an understanding of the different types of roles in the Construction Industry. It will help me progress onto higher levels including apprenticeships.

Materials needed

PPE which includes boots, overalls or dust coat.

What can I do when I finish?

Progression into further courses or an apprenticeship.
