Course overview
Would you like a career in construction but are unsure of which trade, then this is the qualification for you! Designed to give you a taster in painting and decorating. The course covers some theory elements as well as practical tasks to enhance your skills. Students also have the opportunity to visit construction sites and hear from visiting speakers, before progressing further in their chosen craft.
Course requirements
No prior experience or requirements needed.
What will I do?
Preparing surfaces: cleaning and washing down surfaces, filling small holes and cracks, sanding and abrading surfaces, applying primer and undercoat Basic painting techniques: cutting in (edges and corners), using brushes and rollers correctly, applying emulsion to walls and ceilings, applying gloss/eggshell to woodwork, practice on test boards and small rooms to build consistency with coverage and finish. Applying wallpaper (basic level): marking plumb lines, pasting paper, booking paper, hanging simple drop matches or plain papers, trimming neatly at ceilings, skirtings and around obstacles. Creating simple decorative effects, such as: stencil work, basic colour blending or rag rolling (intro level), Preparing and painting doors, frames, and skirting boards. Health and safety awareness: PPE (gloves, masks, overalls, safety glasses), safe ladder use ,handling paints, solvents and adhesives safely ventilation and dust control
What will it give me?
A basic understanding of the Painting and Decorating Industry, plus teaching the teaching of hand skills and practical tasks to allow progression onto higher levels including an apprenticeship.
Materials needed
PPE which includes boots, bib and braces.

Progression into further courses or an apprenticeship.
