Course overview
The Level 3 Certificate in the Principles of Special Educational Needs is designed for adults who want to develop the knowledge and confidence to support children and young people or adults with a wide range of needs. It's suitable for those working or volunteering in schools or further education settings, early years settings, youth services, or community organisations. It's also ideal for anyone working as a Teaching Assistant or Support Worker in mainstream settings supporting pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and Special Educational Needs (SEN), and who wants to enhance their knowledge and practice.
Course requirements
You must have maths and English at Level 2 or GCSE Grade 4 (C) or above and be aged 19 or over. A previous Teaching Assistant qualification (e.g., Level 2/3) is ideal. You should already be working or volunteering in a role where you can apply your learning in practice. A clear DBS is required for anyone working directly with children, young people and vulnerable adults.
What will I do?
You'll complete a set of mandatory units through workshops, self-directed study, and workplace-based tasks, covering: Development of children and young people Professional practice in SEN services Supporting children and young people to achieve learning potential Supporting speech, language and communication needs Supporting disabled children and young people and those with specific requirements Assessment is via a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates your knowledge and practice.
What will it give me?
On completion, you'll achieve a nationally recognised Level 3 Certificate in the Principles of Special Educational Needs. You'll gain deeper insight into SEN, strengthen your ability to support children, young people and adults effectively, and build confidence in applying best practice in education and care settings-especially in mainstream classrooms supporting pupils with EHCPs.
Materials needed
Please bring a notebook, pen, and folder. You'll also need access to a computer or tablet for research, assignments, and compiling your evidence portfolio. All core resources and handouts are provided.
What can I do when I finish?
This qualification supports progression into roles such as SEN Teaching Assistant, Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, Children and Families Support Worker, or Learning Mentor. You can also progress to higher-level study, including degrees such as Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND), Education Studies, Early Childhood Studies, Youth and Community Work, or Social Work.
