Course overview

The Level 3 Certificate in the Principles of Special Educational Needs is designed for adults who want to develop the knowledge and confidence to support children and young people or adults with a wide range of needs. It's suitable for those working or volunteering in schools or further education settings, early years settings, youth services, or community organisations. It's also ideal for anyone working as a Teaching Assistant or Support Worker in mainstream settings supporting pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and Special Educational Needs (SEN), and who wants to enhance their knowledge and practice.

Course requirements

You must have maths and English at Level 2 or GCSE Grade 4 (C) or above and be aged 19 or over. It would be advantageous to hold a previous Teaching Assistant qualification (e.g., Level 2/3) but not essential. You should already ideally be working or volunteering in a role where you can apply your learning in practice. A clear DBS is required for anyone working directly with children, young people and vulnerable adults.

What will I do?

The course is fully self-paced, meaning you can fit your study around work and home commitments. You do not attend any classes or lessons in college nor does a tutor need to come to your workplace. You will receive a dedicated assessor who will support you throughout your studies with us, and who you can contact at for guidance as you work through the qualification. Assessment is via a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates your knowledge and practice. The qualification is made up of five units, covering areas such as: Development of children and young people Understanding a range of Special Educational Needs Inclusive, person-centred approaches Supporting individuals and working effectively with families and professionals Legislation, policies and safeguarding linked to SEN

What will it give me?

On completion, you'll achieve a nationally recognised Level 3 Certificate in the Principles of Special Educational Needs. You'll gain deeper insight into SEN, strengthen your ability to support children, young people and adults effectively, and build confidence in applying best practice in education and care settings-especially in mainstream classrooms supporting pupils with EHCPs.

Materials needed

You will need access to a computer or tablet for research, assignments, and compiling your evidence portfolio.

What can I do when I finish?

This qualification supports progression into roles such as SEN Teaching Assistant, Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, Children and Families Support Worker, or Learning Mentor. You can also apply for our Foundation Degree in Education Studies at Bishop Auckland College. In addition, you can apply for higher-level study, including degrees in other related disciplines such as Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND), Early Childhood Studies, Youth and Community Work, or Social Work.
