Baccanalia and Bishop Auckland College students unite for Pride Mural in town centre

As part of Pride Month 2025, Baccanalia has commissioned a bold and vibrant mural on Bishop Auckland’s designated graffiti wall, located near the Smokehouse restaurant, to celebrate and champion the values of inclusion, love and identity.
Pride Mural Bishop Auckland
The large-scale artwork is being led by Newton Aycliffe-based artist Dan Walls of Illumination Wall Art and takes inspiration from the distinctive style of renowned queer artist Keith Haring.
Designed as a statement of visibility and community pride, the mural will remain in place throughout June as a public celebration of LGBTQ+ identity.
Students from Bishop Auckland College have been invited to contribute to the project, gaining valuable hands-on experience under Dan’s guidance.
Through a series of creative tutorials, students are learning spray-paint techniques, from drawing foundational shapes to completing the full composition, developing new artistic skills while actively participating in a meaningful cultural initiative.
Dan Walls, Artist, Illumination Wall Art, said: “The mural has turned out brilliantly, and I’m really proud of what the students achieved -especially considering many had never worked with spray paint before or at this scale.
“My role was simply to guide them: refining their ideas, teaching them the basics, and helping neaten things up as they gained confidence.
“The Keith Haring-inspired design was a fantastic choice; his legacy in both the LGBTQ+ movement and graffiti culture made it the perfect tribute.
“My only regret is that the mural isn’t a permanent fixture – there’s so much potential in Bishop Auckland for more colourful, uplifting public art to revitalise underused spaces.”
And Thomas Wales, Director, Baccanalia, said: “We get such a buzz from working with the learners at Bishop Auckland College. It’s a privilege to support unique educational experiences – something you won’t find in standard learning centres.
“The students at Bishop Auckland College are incredibly lucky to be supported by such a forward-thinking, opportunity-driven team who are committed to giving them the best possible start to their careers.”
The mural’s unveiling will coincide with the return of Bishop Auckland Pride, Baccanalia’s flagship event in Pride Month, which takes place on Saturday, June 14 within the grounds of Bishop Auckland College.
“The event promises a packed programme of live entertainment, family activities, and headline performances, including a special appearance by Danny Beard, winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK and recent Big Brother contestant.
