Bishop Auckland College students to unveil giant Equinox Lights art installation during Community Action Week

Students from Bishop Auckland College are set to illuminate the town centre with the grand reveal of a giant, brand-new art installation as the sparkling centrepiece to start the college’s ambitious Community Action Week.
The highly anticipated reveal of the Equinox Lights arch will take place during Street Food Fridays in Bishop Auckland Market Place on Friday, March 27, from 4pm to 9pm, with the official light switch-on scheduled for 6.30pm.
During the event, the hardworking student learners will see the fully finished installation for the very first time since it was created during a session with Bridge Creative.
This will lead the community countdown to officially switching the lights on and be celebrated for their creative contributions in front of the cameras and the local community.
Ben Tinkler, Founder and Managing Director of Bridge Creative, said: “It’s been fantastic to involve Bishop Auckland College students in the creation of the Equinox Lights installation and see their creativity become part of something the whole town can experience together.
“Street Food Fridays is all about bringing people together, with great food and a wonderful community atmosphere, and keeping alive that last Friday of the month tradition that traders, families and the wider community know and love.”
“This project has been generously supported by Arts Council England as part of our shared commitment to community creativity. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and the stunning design they have produced with Bridge Creative.”

The Equinox Lights switch-on will lead to numerous other highlights during Bishop Auckland College’s Community Action Week, a massive initiative designed to give back to the local area.
Anne-Marie Chiswell, Bishop Auckland College’s assistant principal, said: “Lending a helping hand to the community that supports us all year-round is what this initiative is all about.
“Community Action Week is our way of giving back and saying a big thank you to everyone who has helped bring it together – it’s been a real college-wide effort. Over 500 students will be involved across 25-plus projects, making a positive difference in our local area.”
Projects undertaken by the students will vary in size and scope across the area.
Students will complete exterior and decorating jobs at Cockton Hill Infants’ School, produce media and promotional materials at Bishop Auckland People’s Museum and clean gravestones at the Bishop Auckland Remembrance Garden.
They will also prepare the wellbeing garden at Staindrop Academy, help make food and drinks for the homeless with Cornerstone, and build benches and planters while assisting with fencing surrounds.
Additionally, learners will capture high-quality photography for the Bishop Auckland Town Council, among many other valuable community initiatives.
