The Level 2 Certificate in Art and Design is a practical and creative qualification designed for learners who want to develop a broad range of artistic skills, techniques, and creative understanding. This course provides an introduction to a variety of art and design disciplines, helping learners build confidence, creativity, and technical ability while exploring different materials, methods, and processes. Learners will develop ideas, experiment with techniques, and create a portfolio of work that demonstrates personal creativity and artistic development. The qualification is suitable for those wishing to build skills for further study, employment, or personal creative interests. It is designed for those with a Level 1 qualification or some experience in an art classroom and prior learning.
Course requirements
Level 1 or equivalent subject, keen interest in art and design and commitment to attend for a full years programme.
What will I do?
During the course, learners will explore a range of art and design practices, which may include drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, textiles, mixed media, ceramics, digital art, and design processes. You will investigate creative themes, research artists and designers, and experiment with different materials and techniques to develop your own ideas and outcomes. Practical projects will support the development of technical skills, creative problem-solving, and personal expression while encouraging learners to reflect on and evaluate their work throughout the creative process.
What will it give me?
This qualification will help you develop practical art and design skills, creative confidence, and a greater understanding of artistic processes and materials. Learners will improve skills in planning, problem-solving, communication, research, and evaluation while developing a portfolio of creative work. The course supports independent thinking, experimentation, and confidence in expressing ideas visually. On completion, learners will gain a recognised Level 2 qualification and transferable skills that can support further study, creative careers, or personal artistic development.
Materials needed
Basic materials and access to specialist equipment are typically provided during lessons; however, learners may be asked to bring a sketchbook, pencils, notebook, apron, or suitable clothing for practical activities. Some specialist materials for personal projects may occasionally be required depending on the area of study, and tutors will advise learners if additional items are needed. Learners are encouraged to bring enthusiasm, creativity, and a willingness to experiment with different techniques and materials.
What can I do when I finish?
After completing the Level 2 Certificate in Art and Design, learners may progress onto Level 3 qualifications in Art and Design or specialist creative pathways such as fine art, textiles, photography, ceramics, graphic design, or fashion. The course also provides a strong foundation for developing a creative portfolio, exploring employment opportunities within the creative industries, volunteering in arts settings, or continuing art and design as a personal interest or hobby.
