Course overview

This Level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Computing (Cyber Security) is a higher education qualification designed to provide a broad introduction to computing with a specialist focus on cyber security. The programme is recognised by employers and higher education providers as a key technical qualification at Level 4. The course develops core computing knowledge and skills alongside an applied understanding of cyber security principles, threats, vulnerabilities and protective measures. You will explore how organisations design, manage and secure systems, networks and data in response to an increasingly complex cyber threat landscape. Teaching and learning are rooted in practical application, using realistic scenarios and simulated environments to reflect professional practice in the sector. Students will study a combination of core computing units and specialist cyber security units, including Programming, Networking, Professional Practice, Database Design and Development, Security, Cyber Security and Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Course requirements

Applicants should hold a minimum of 80 UCAS points from IT or related subjects achieved through A-Levels, Level 3 Diplomas or Certificates, or an Access to HE qualification. Equivalent international qualifications will also be considered. Applicants should also have GCSE Maths and English at Grade 4/C or above (or Level 2 Functional Skills). Applications from mature students with relevant life or employment experience ideally from a digital or technical role will also be considered on an individual basis.

What will I do?

Students will study a combination of core computing units and specialist cyber security units, including Programming, Networking, Professional Practice, Database Design and Development, Security, Cyber Security and Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

What will it give me?

Completion of both years of the HND will give you a Pearson HND in Computing (Cyber Security) Level 4.

Materials needed

You will need all basic stationery items for studying. Students will also be made aware of any key texts / books which may be advisable to purchase for the programme. If this is the case, you will be notified of these during induction. A laptop computer would be advantageous however this is not essential as the College has dedicated IT facilities for Higher Education students and adults.

What can I do when I finish?

On successful completion of the HNC in Computing (Cyber Security), student may progress into employment or further study. Potential progression routes include: - Junior Cyber Security Analyst - IT Support Technician with a security focus - Network or Systems Support Technician - Digital Risk or Compliance Assistant Many students choose to continue their studies for a further year, by progressing onto our Level 5 HND in Computing (Cyber Security), with opportunities to progress further after that to a Level 6 top-up degree in Computing or Cyber Security at one of our local universities.
