Designed for students who are still deciding on their next steps, this course gives you the opportunity to experience a range of vocational areas while developing essential skills for both further study and employment. You will gain hands-on experience, work with local employers, and develop the personal qualities that are key to success in the workplace.

There are no formal entry requirements-just a positive attitude, a willingness to learn, and an interest in developing your skills.

What will I do?

You will take part in a wide range of engaging and practical activities designed to build your confidence, independence, and employability skills. As part of your course, you will complete two core units: - Unit A1: Being Organised - develop essential skills in time management, planning, and working effectively - Unit A2: Developing a Personal Progression Plan - explore your career ideas, set goals, and plan your next steps Alongside these, you will study three additional units such as Exploring Local Tourist Attractions, Event and Teamwork Skills Development, and Keeping Fit and Healthy, helping you to develop valuable personal, social, and workplace skills. You will also have the opportunity to experience two vocational areas from across the college-such as Construction, Catering, IT, or Hair & Beauty-giving you the chance to gain hands-on experience and discover what suits you best. To enhance your learning, you will work with local employers such as The Auckland Project, Shildon Alive, and The Butterwick Hospice, as well as take part in employer visits to organisations including Amazon, local fire stations, and the Pioneering Care Partnership (PCP). You will also have opportunities to take part in work placements, gain real experience by working in our McIntyre Café, and get involved in volunteering opportunities with local charities-helping you to build confidence, develop workplace skills, and make a positive contribution to your community.

Materials needed

You will need basic stationery, including folders and a notepad. Personal protective equipment (PPE) may also be required for some vocational areas.

What can I do when I finish?

You can choose a relevant vocational course you have enjoyed attending in college to complete a full time course or look for employment.
