What You Need to Know About Foundation Apprenticeships
As the landscape of education and employment continues to evolve, Foundation Apprenticeships have emerged as an exciting and accessible route for young people looking to bridge the gap between school and the workplace.
At Bishop Auckland College, we’re proud to offer the new Foundation Apprenticeships initiative, supporting learners as they take that important first step into a career and helping employers develop the future of their workforce.
What are Foundation Apprenticeships?
Foundation Apprenticeships are entry-level programmes designed to prepare individuals, typically aged 16 and over, for further training or employment. They blend classroom learning with real-world experience in the workplace, making them a valuable introduction to both academic development and practical skill-building.
These apprenticeships are especially suited to those who may not yet be ready to enter a full-time role but would benefit from a supportive, hands-on learning environment.
Delivered through a college or training provider like Bishop Auckland College, they provide a strong foundation to grow in confidence, ability and ambition.
Why were Foundation Apprenticeships introduced?
The Foundation Apprenticeship model was introduced to increase access to apprenticeships for young people who need extra support, time or confidence before stepping into employment.
Foundation Apprenticeships also provide employers with a route to engage early with potential future talent, especially in sectors where recruiting young, skilled workers can be a challenge.
By giving learners a real taste of the world of work, Foundation Apprenticeships can raise aspirations and help individuals discover careers they may not have considered at a younger age.
Bishop Auckland College offers inclusive education pathways, such as Foundation Apprenticeships, to provide students of all backgrounds with access to future career opportunities.
What qualifications do they offer?
Learners completing a Foundation Apprenticeship typically work towards:
- Functional Skills in English and Maths (if not already achieved)
- A Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard or a sector-relevant vocational qualification
- Additional units to develop employability and personal development skills
The programme is flexible and tailored to both the learner’s needs and the demands of the specific sector they are training in, from health and social care to construction.
What’s included in a Foundation Apprenticeship?
At Bishop Auckland College, we provide classroom learning to build knowledge and confidence for young learners. Mentoring and support guide learners through the programme and prepare them for progression, with a focus on developing the attitudes, behaviours and skills employers value.
Working with local employers, students will benefit from work-based learning or placements, gaining hands-on experience. Employers may also receive up to £2,000 per Foundation Apprentice (subject to retention and progression).
This structured mix helps learners make a smooth transition into a full apprenticeship or further education route.
How do they differ from standard apprenticeships?
While both Foundation and standard apprenticeships involve work-based learning, there are a few key differences:
Feature | Foundation Apprenticeship | Standard Apprenticeship |
Entry level | Yes (Level 2 or below) | Typically Level 2–5+ |
Work hours | May be part-time or flexible | Usually full-time employment |
Support level | Higher, more structured | More independent learning |
Primary goal | Build readiness for further training | Develop occupation-specific skills |
In essence, Foundation Apprenticeships serve as a stepping stone which are ideal for those who need a little extra support before progressing into a full apprenticeship or employment.
For Students and Employers
For learners, a Foundation Apprenticeship offers a valuable head start in their career, helping them build the confidence and skills to succeed.
For employers, it’s a meaningful way to support young people in the community while introducing new energy and potential into the business.
At Bishop Auckland College, we offer a wide range of apprenticeships at different levels, supporting career journeys from first steps to skilled employment.
