Course overview

Not everyone can attend regular classes- Flexible Learning means you can study at times and locations to suit you. More and more people are choosing to study on a Flexible Learning course to improve their general employability skills. The courses can be offered in a venue within the community and built around your training requirements. Funding eligibility criteria:

• Candidate must be aged 19 or over on 31 August of current year
• Candidates aged 19-23 must already hold a Full Level 2 Qualification
• Candidates must have resided in the EU for the past three years

Course requirements

Learners must have a genuine interest in their chosen subject. This course is designed for learners who wish to develop their knowledge of the safe handling of medicines within a health and social care setting. Learners do not have to be in employment to enrol on this course.

What will I do?

You will be required to complete two modules of study Module A Understand medication and prescriptions.

Record keeping and audit processes for medication.

Module B Supply, storage and disposal of medication. Understand the requirements for the safe administration of medication. Learners are required to complete assessments that are based upon the information and activities within the learning materials provided. There is no end test or multiple choice exam for this course.

What will it give me?

By following this programme, learners will develop an understanding of the safe handling of medicines within a health and social care context. It provides an introduction to the various medicines learners are likely to encounter in a work environment, covering how medication is supplied and administered, and the possible side effects. The programme explores the procedures for obtaining, storing and disposing of medicines and the legislation surrounding these areas. It also examines the audit process and learners’ responsibility in relation to this, emphasising the importance of accountability and confidentiality.

Poor practice in relation to the administration of medicines can lead to serious errors being made and ultimately cause injury to people using health and social care settings. Therefore, it’s essential that care staff understand procedures for handling medicines safely and that they follow safe practice guidelines when dealing with medicine administration.

On successful completion of the course a Level 2 certificate will be awarded. The course is accredited by a nationally recognised awarding body.
