Course overview

This course follows the new specification GCSE Mathematics, which grades students from 9-1 instead of from A*-G. A grade 5 is broadly equivalent to a ‘high’ grade C. The emphasis is very much on using and applying mathematics to solve the types of problems that you may meet in your jobs and everyday lives. There will be three exams in May/June and 100% term-time attendance is expected between September and the exam date. The course is fast-paced in order to cover the required material to be prepared for the summer examinations. Students must be prepared to study at home in addition to the class work.

Course requirements

Due to the fast pace of the course and the depth of mathematical content, students are required to have a grade D/3 at GCSE or a Level 2 Functional Maths certificate, obtained within the past 5 years. Candidates without an appropriate entry qualification will be considered only in exceptional circumstances. In all cases, entry onto the course is also subject to an initial assessment and a short interview. Having made an application, you will be invited in to meet the course leader, find out about the course, and then, should you wish to proceed with your application, you will be invited in for an initial assessment session.

What will I do?

Learners will study one evening (3hrs) per week between September and the summer examinations in May/June. There are two exams in May/June, each of 2.15 hours. Attendance at all exams is compulsory. One exam is non-calculator and the other is calculator.

What will it give me?

You will be studying towards a GCSE in Mathematics, and your final grade will be between 9-1 which is the new course specification for Maths and English. A grade 5 is broadly equivalent to a ‘high’ grade C. (current government guidance around grade boundaries Jan, 2017)

Materials needed

You will need basic stationery items (pens, pencils, rules, lined pad, protractor, compass, file etc) as well as a Casio scientific calculator.

What can I do when I finish?

GCSE Maths is necessary for most careers and for progression into further and higher education.
