This part time course combines academic learning with practical skills and hands on projects in your workplace.
This University of Sunderland foundation degree, delivered at Bishop Auckland College, provides a professional development opportunity for those working with young people in nurseries, primary schools, youth centres or similar settings.
The part time format of the course allows you to fit it alongside a job within education and care. To make it even more convenient, the course is run at five partner colleges and you can choose whichever college is easiest for you to attend.
The course mixes academic rigour with practical skills that you can apply directly to your workplace. Modules include the social context of childhood, professional practice in safeguarding of children and young people, and social policy and children's wellbeing.
There is also a strong emphasis on personal development with specific modules on study and self and thinking skills, creativity and problem solving. In the final year you will design and carry out a project on a topic of personal interest that can be related to your day-to-day employment. The course leads to a foundation degree qualification that will enhance your professional standing in the workplace and make you a more valuable employee. Some students have commented on an enhanced standing whilst still studying for the degree as they are bringing up-to-date knowledge, skills and understanding to the workplace which have been welcomed by senior colleagues. It will also help open doors to new opportunities in the education and care of young people.

Fd Education and Care at Bishop Auckland College
Following the Government guidance that all schools and colleges should fully re-open from September and providing there are no new lockdown measures or further local restrictions introduced, Bishop Auckland College are preparing to welcome new and returning students into college for the new academic year.
We will make all reasonable efforts to provide the Fd Education and Care course and student experience as outlined and we will use a variety of teaching methods to ensure this is the case, including blended learning depending on the course requirements. We will continue to follow Government guidance on how to minimise the risk and protect our students, staff and the employers we work with. It may, however, be necessary to make changes in response to COVID-19 whilst we continue to follow government guidance.
We also require 2 passes at GCSE grade C or above, which must include Mathematics and English Language, or a minimum of Level 2 Key Skills in Communication and Application of Number. If you have studied for a GCSE which has a numerical grade then you will need to achieve a grade 4 or above.
In addition to these academic qualifications, you should have at least two years’ relevant work experience, and you should be employed in a role related to the education and care of young people as well as hold in the following:
BTEC Level 3
NVQ Level 3
CACHE Diploma in Education and Childcare
GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent qualifications) in maths and English If you have studied for a GCSE which has a numerical grade then you will need to achieve a grade 4 or above
A satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check that has an issue date within three years at the start date of the programme

Applicants are required to hold a satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Satisfactory Enhanced DBS checks must have an issue date that is within the last three years at the point of enrolment.
Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)
If you feel you already know some of the topics covered in this course, either due to previous learning or from experience of work, then you may not need to study all of the course.
Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) is the name given to the process of gaining credit towards a qualification because of something you have learnt in the past. If you are eligible for APL you won't have to learn the same topic again, and so you can be exempt from a module, set of modules or year of a course.

Foundation Degrees combine academic study with work-based learning and you have the opportunity to learn in the workplace as well as at college. Teaching methods include practical sessions, lectures, discussions, case studies and workshops. We also encourage you to develop independent study skills. Assessment methods include evaluation of work experience, reports and presentations.
