Course overview
Construction is the UK's biggest industry, with two million people working in
over 700 diverse careers. Once working in the industry, there are many
opportunities to develop skills throughout your career.
The Diploma in
Carpentry & Joinery Level 1 covers topics such as how to carry out safe
working practices in construction, produce basic woodworking joints and maintain
and use carpentry and joinery hand / power tools.

Course requirements
Minimum 3 GCSE’s at grades 2 - 1 (E - F) or equivalent, or entry level qualification. Alternative qualifications and experience will be considered.
What will I do?
The new City & Guilds Construction Diplomas are highly regarded within the Industry. You will carry out many activities on this course relating to Carpentry, Joinery and Construction.
Diploma in Carpentry & Joinery Level 1 Units will include:
- Principles of building construction, information and communication
- Maintain and use carpentry and joinery hand tools
- Prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools
- Produce woodworking joints
- Health, safety and welfare in construction
You will also be part of the Carpentry & Joinery business here at the College, BAC Joinery. You will carry out projects, manufacture products for sale and develop the business for continuous success.
What will it give me?
The course will give you the essential skills and knowledge needed in order to progress onto either Carpentry (Site) or Joinery (Bench) Level 2.
Materials needed
You will require safety steel toe cap boots and a polo shirt and jumper, which you can purchase from the College. You will also be provided with a high visibility vest for practical lessons.
What can I do when I finish?
If you gain suitable grades you may want to progress to the Level 2 Site Carpentry or a paid Level 2 Apprenticeship.
