HND in Public Services L5Higher Education · Full Time · Public Services & Criminology · Bishop Auckland Campus
Our Public Services HND is a two-year, full-time course aimed at students wanting to continue their education through applied learning. Higher Nationals provide a wide-ranging study of public services and are designed for students who wish to pursue or advance their career in this sector. Increasingly the public services are asking for a higher education from their applicants; they are seeking employees who can apply knowledge they have gained to many environments, employees who can be flexible and adaptable to ever changing situations and have an awareness of current trends and the impact this will have on the sector.
Our course covers many of these pertinent topics and will ensure you have the skills and knowledge required for when applying to your chosen career. Our tutors have ‘on the job’ experience and will provide you with lots of opportunities for networking across the sector as well as access to guest speakers and visits to various public service-related places of work. In the past learners have had the opportunity to visit the local fire station, Durham Crown Court, Meadowfield police training facility, Houses of Parliament as well as meet and greet guest speakers from Probation, Police dog handlers, Royal Marines and the British Army amongst many others.
Entry requirements include one of the following:
•Level 3 qualification in public services or related discipline or A Levels in related subjects
•Access to higher education certificate
•A student with relevant work experience and a good standard or education who would benefit from this qualification
All students must have at least a grade 4 (or C) in GCSE maths and English (or an equivalent qualification).

What will it give me?
Higher National Diploma (HND) in Public Services (this is equivalent to the first two years of a bachelor degree).
Basic stationery materials are required including either 1 lever arch file or 4 A4 notebooks. It is recommended that students also purchase highlighters, different coloured ink pens and sticky notes to aid research tasks; a memory stick may also prove useful if you like to keep a back up copy of work completed.
What can I do when I finish?
Completion of our HND will allow you to apply for the HM Prison and Probation Service PQiP program as a probation officer, or you could continue your studies at one of our pathway universities, namely Sunderland and Teesside. Previous students have continued to ‘top up’ their HND and have completed a BA (Hons) in Criminology or a BA (Hons) in Police studies at the retrospective universities. Alternatively, you could apply for the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) as your HND will give you the opportunity to grow your experience in the criminal justice field, maybe as a Police Special or a volunteer working with NEPACS in a local prison service visitor centre.
A career in teaching may also be your calling, if so, then you can continue to complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) right here at Bishop Auckland College. Whatever your chosen path, our HND will give you a head start in the public service sector and enable you to progress up the career ladder.
