Course overview

The T-levels are brand-new courses providing a fantastic opportunity to gain the correct knowledge and skills needed in the textiles and fashion industry to progress into a range of opportunities with highly skilled employers and/or progression into higher education. During the course students will attend work placement with local employers to enhance their skill set and gain valuable insight into the creative industry of fashion and textiles. They will be taught cultural context and vocabulary, as well as audience and consumer need in order to develop their specialism. Students will also have the opportunity to experiment with different materials, processes, tools and techniques, which will support the rich cultural context of their course and develop their research skills.

Course requirements

Potential students will need a minimum of 4 GCSE’s Grade 4 or above which must include English and math’s. Students need a passion for working in the textiles and fashion industry and are willing to attend college 4 days a week and placement 1 day a week.

What will I do?

The course is split into three different elements where you will study core units/assessments around underpinning knowledge, generating ideas, communication, developing designs and ideas, working collaboratively and reflective practice.

There is also an employer set project that is externally assessed but you complete within college, taking all the skills that you have learnt within your work placement. This includes: a research report, mood board and presentation, final design, completion and collaboration with an end reflective evaluation.

You will also complete some work within your occupational specialism that includes research, working on sustainable fabrics, costs and budgets, creating from patterns, sewing, dying, design and experimentation. Different types of fashion industries and the roles that you can do, visits to museums, exhibitions, product development and industry standards.

What can I do when I finish?

A T Level course carries UCAS points that allows you to go onto university and study a degree around fashion and textiles. It also gives you the work experience you may need to find full time employment with an employer in the fashion and textiles industry.
