Ewan McCaulay

Following completion of his GCSEs, Ewan began his career journey at South West Durham Training studying a Level 3 Certificate in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering achieving an overall distinction grade. During his first year of study, and whilst completing a work placement at Magneco-Metrel in Shildon, Ewan was delighted to be offered an apprenticeship as a Technical Support Engineer!

Ewan said “When I left school, I decided upon a career in the engineering sector and found the right course for me at SWDT. They have excellent facilities and the tutors are brilliant. Whilst studying, the Student Progression team provided me with careers support and arranged my work placement at the refractory manufacturer Magneco-Metrel. At the end of my work placement I was delighted to be offered an apprenticeship and I am now employed as a Technical Support Engineer Apprentice which involves being part of the team who design and produce CAD drawings for the reprofiling of furnaces for applications in the reheat, glass, frit and sodium silicate industries. I am really enjoying my new role whilst continuing my studies at SWDT and very excited to have been given the opportunity to work in Germany with the company!”

Mark Taylor, Manager said “Ewan was fantastic, very proactive and willing to learn whilst on work placement. We made a job offer immediately and were delighted that this was accepted by Ewan.”
