Bishop Auckland College partners with Durham University to Open New Career Pathways for Students
Bishop Auckland College partners with Durham University to offer students exciting career pathways beyond traditional academics, showcasing professional roles through the @Work initiative and providing valuable work placement opportunities.
Bishop Auckland College is forging new paths for its students thanks to an innovative partnership with Durham University.
The @Work initiative, a key component of the Durham Learning Alliance, aims to connect local college students with professional services’ roles at the university, highlighting exciting opportunities that go beyond traditional academic routes.
Durham University hosted an event at Bishop Auckland College, attended by almost 100 students, to showcase these non-academic career options. The event focused on areas like bricklaying, painting and decorating, carpentry, plumbing and hospitality – all fields where Bishop Auckland College students receive top-notch training.
Clayton Lucas, Progression Coach (Work Placement Specialist) at Bishop Auckland College, said: “During the session, Durham University staff, including some former apprentices, shared personal experiences and professional insights into their roles, their professional journeys and the steps they took to secure these positions.”
Durham University staff from various departments, including Human Resources, Catering Services, Event Management, Estates and General Services, were on hand to share their expertise and personal experiences. This event was just the first step in a broader initiative to illustrate students with potential career paths, diverse and rewarding, at Durham University.
A follow-up visit to the university campus is planned, allowing students to further explore relevant departments and meet with professionals in their respective fields.
Jennifer Phillips, Head of Community and Careers said “Our first event with Durham University was a fantastic opportunity for our students to explore a wide range of career pathways, work placement and apprenticeship opportunities whilst gaining inspiration from University staff. "The event enabled students to see Durham University as not just a place to study, but an amazing place to work.”
