Catering and Hospitality Students join the Bishop Auckland Food Festival

A sandwich with a bounce: stottie cakes from Bishop Auckland College (Demo’s & Tasters)

This year we are celebrating one of the North-East’s most famous food exports: the good old stottie cake.

Food Festival Students

The typically flat, round loaf gets its name from the fact it was traditionally bounced off the kitchen floor to check it was the right texture (in Northumbrian ‘to stott’ means to bounce). Don’t worry, we don’t do that anymore!

Our catering and hospitality students and staff will be providing demonstrations and sampling tasters from our street deli van and stall. Pop along and see us preparing the stottie-cake dough and sample fresh from the oven with a dollop of home-made Pease-pudding plus a taste of vegetarian or beef casserole!

College trainee chefs will also be supporting celebrity chefs Karen Wright (former British Bake Off contestant) and Bishop’s own Mike Bartley (Masterchef contestant last year) at their events during the weekend.

Did you know? Bishop Auckland College offers a range of short, part-time and full time cookery courses including introduction to Chinese, Indian or Italian cuisine, bread making, barista training, food-hygiene award and professional cookery courses!
