Early Years Teaching Assistant,
Hartside Primary Academy, Crook
Apprentice of the Year Sophie, initially enrolled at 6th Form to study A Levels following completion of her GCSEs. However, Sophie soon realised that this was not the educational journey for her and successfully applied for an Advanced Early Years Educator Level 3 Apprenticeship with Bishop Auckland College and Hartside Primary Academy in Crook. Following completion of her apprenticeship in September 2023 with an amazing Distinction grade, Sophie was absolutely delighted to be offered a full-time permanent role supporting children in the Early Years Foundation Stage!
Sophie said “I carried on at 6th Form after my GCSEs but quickly realised that this was not the route for me. Unsure of my career plan, I saw the early years apprenticeship advertised through Bishop Auckland College and decided to apply. It was the best thing I have ever done! My apprenticeship with the College was amazing; my tutors and assessors fully prepared me for working in the early years sector and I gained so much knowledge which I could then apply to my activities with the children. Nearing the end of my apprenticeship, I was delighted to be offered a full-time permanent position in the school working across the Early Years Foundation Stage in the reception and nursery classes. I love my new role and work with an amazing team in early years. I have also had the opportunity to complete additional training including paediatric first aid, safeguarding, prevent and safe handling of medication. The apprenticeship enabled me to find my perfect career as I love working with children and I have also gained more confidence speaking to parents and carers. My day involves supporting small groups with phonics and planning and delivering a range of play experiences. I love watching the children grow, develop and learn through play. Every day is different, imaginative and fun!”

She has boundless energy, passion and enthusiasm and is so amazing with the children, in particular the support she provides for our SEND children. Sophie always puts 100% effort into everything she does and uses her own initiative with every task. Staff and children absolutely love her!”
