Ben Dixon
Commis Chef, The Manor House Hotel, West Auckland
Ben began his career journey at Bishop Auckland College at the age of 16, following his GCSEs. Ben initially completed an Introduction to Culinary Skills Level 1 programme before progressing and successfully completing Diplomas in Professional Cookery at Level 2 and 3. Ben gained part-time employment and also completed a work placement at the Manor House Hotel in West Auckland. He was delighted to be offered his first Commis Chef role straight from leaving College!
Ross, Deputy General Manager said “Ben has gone from strength to strength since joining the Manor House from College. I have been very impressed with his knowledge and skills at such a young age. We were thrilled to employ him from the local College.”
Ben said “My passion is food and I have always enjoyed cooking from a young age. I would love to become a Head Chef in the future and my new Commis Chef role is a good starting point. My duties in the kitchen include supporting the Sous Chef, food preparation, cooking tasks, keeping the kitchen clean, controlling stock, measuring ingredients and helping with deliveries. I love my new role. It is a very fast paced kitchen, but I work with a great team who are supporting me to develop my skills. I was taught so much by my tutors at the College and having the opportunity to complete work placement and prepare dishes for events in the local community has been a great way to learn. The Student Progression team provided job application and interview technique sessions. This helped massively in securing employment in my chosen field.”
Ben is being mentored by the Hotel’s Sous Chef who was previously employed in a 2* Michelin restaurant in the North East. Jenna, Sous Chef said “Ben is really keen and I have been very impressed with his skills. We are currently planning a new menu for the restaurant and Ben will be learning how to cook some amazing dishes including duck, salmon, seabass and venison.”
